CENTRAL, Louisiana (WAFB) – Republic Services, known to pick up most of the trash in the Capital Region, takes more heat for slow service.
The company says it is battling uncharted territory with COVID and a hurricane. However, clients say they want results.
“Whenever they don’t come, I call them,” said Mary Hension, who lives in Bellingrath Hills in Central. “The lady said today, ‘Oh, Mrs. Mary, haven’t they picked up your trash yet? “”
She added that 311 should know her name and address by heart, since she has to call all the time just to have her garbage picked up.
“If they can’t come and get you, email us, text us, something and tell us they’ll be there that week,” Hension pleaded.
She’s not the only one having problems getting her trash picked up. At one point, she and other neighbors had to drag their trash cans into a dumpster just to take the trash out of their backyards.
“We saw them several times picking up just down the street from our house, walking right past us, then stopping at the next trash can at the intersection of Morgan and Thibodeaux,” said Donna LeSage.
She added that Republic Services only seem to pick up parts of the city and sometimes the garbage truck only passes once a week for them, while they pay for it to be picked up twice a week. week.
“We’ve had an average of 50% or less pickup and we’ve had that since we got Republic. They go through a period where if someone complains enough and gets enough attention, then they decide to do their job for a short time, ”explained LeSage.
Minutes after the interview with LeSage ended, a Republic Services employee stopped by her house, apologized for the delays and added that they would now know about their garbage.
Republic Services said there are good and legitimate reasons it missed collection in the areas it serves, including a shortage of drivers due to COVID and added which is an increase of 25 % of the amount of garbage due to the increased number of people in the house in recent times. Officials said there was also a backup at the landfill due to all the debris from the storm, meaning it takes longer for drivers to empty their loads and get back on the road.

Area city councilor Aaron Moak said the city-parish contract with Republic is in effect next year and that’s why he’s keeping a close eye on the company’s issues.
“When it comes to rewriting this contract, you have to take the good parts and improve them,” Moak said. “Make sure we have the corrective authority. I guess that’s what I mean: if there are any shortcomings, we are able to better deal with them on the fly. “
Garbage collection is still a topical issue in other areas of Louisiana. Republic Services said it only picks up trash once a week in New Orleans.
