‘Protocol is Irish unity in transition,’ says TUV chief

TUV leader Jim Allister spoke to an anti-protocol rally in Lurgan tonight (Friday 8 April), saying any trade unionist who accepts the protocol ’embraces the transition out of the UK and into a Irish Republic”. .

Addressing the crowd of rallyers, Mr Allister said: “Such is the protocol’s fundamental attack on our constitutional position which is irreconcilable with meaningful membership in the UK

“The basic principle of the protocol is that Britain is a foreign country and that Northern Ireland, in trade terms, is an integral part of the EU on what will be the economically integrated island of Ireland.

“The declaration of Britain as a ‘third country’ or foreign country goes to the very heart of the Union. No wonder the Court of Appeal accepted that the Protocol had made Article 6 of the Acts of Union – the very basis of the UK’s economic union – subject

“It is because of this defining designation of Britain as a foreign country that we have the madness of the Poots Posts imposing checks on goods from the rest of the UK. Such customs checks – shamefully overseen by a DUP minister – are the physical manifestation that now when moving goods from GB to NI they move from UK sovereign territory to UK sovereign territory What a shocking assault and insufferable against our proclaimed position as part of the United Kingdom!

“So any trade unionist who finds nothing to protest in the Protocol and who, indeed, disparages the protests and the protesters, unfortunately, but clearly, does not understand the Protocol or its union dismantling synergy.

“Unionist voters who are appalled by such complacency can and should express that disappointment through the way they roll out their preferences in the election. It’s time for strength, not weakness.”
