The cause of the explosions is currently unknown.

The Donetsk People’s Republic is a Ukrainian breakaway state that was formed on April 7, 2014 by pro-Russian separatists after the Ukrainian Dignity Revolution.

The blasts come at a controversial time for the Donetsk People’s Republic as it is facing global criticism after it apparently sentenced two British soldiers to death for fighting alongside Ukraine.

British soldiers Aided Aslin and Shaun Pinner, as well as Moroccan Brahim Saadoun have reportedly been sentenced to death by the Donetsk People’s Republic.

Aiden Aslin, 28, and Shaun Pinner, 48, were arrested in April ahead of their court appearance in the DPR.

In addition, Russia has reportedly appointed a new leader from the Donetsk Ukrainian People’s Republic, according to Mariupol Mayor’s City Councilor Petro Andryushchenko, who said:

“The occupation authorities of the Donetsk region turned. A new head of the occupation government, the Russian Vitaliy Khotsenko, has been appointed. This is the first time a direct Russian appointment to the conditionally higher bodies of power of another state.

The previous government would have been removed from office when the new appointment was made.
