Panaji, Mar 12 (PTI) BJP MP-elect Vishwajit Rane met with Goa PS Governor Sreedharan Pillai on Saturday, sparking political speculation at a time when the new government is yet to be sworn in. He later said it was his personal visit.
Rane has projected himself as a candidate for chief minister of Goa after the BJP won 20 out of 40 total seats in recent elections, sources said. Two members of the MGP and three independents have already given their support to the BJP, which is expected to form a government for the third consecutive term.
Rane met with the governor after the latter dissolved the state legislature, whose term expires on March 15.
Earlier in the day, outgoing chief minister Pramod Sawant tendered his resignation to the governor, paving the way for the formation of a new government. He was appointed CM guardian by the governor Seeking to quell speculation, Rane released a statement saying he had met the governor on a personal basis as he wanted to invite Pillai to his constituency of Valpoi and take his blessing after his election victory.
Rane, a former state health minister, won the Valpoi segment while his wife, Deviya, who was aligned with the BJP, emerged victorious in the Poriem assembly constituency.
