In a bid to change the names of cities, towns and villages in the state, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has asked for suggestions from people in the northeastern state saying that the government of the State was considering changing the names of the places which are contradictory. to the civilization and culture of the State and are also derogatory with regard to any community of caste.
In a tweet shared on Wednesday, the Chief Minister also announced that a portal would be launched to invite suggestions on changing place names across the state, adding that the name of a city, town or of a village should represent its culture, tradition, and civilization.
The move came just a day after Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, speaking at a groundbreaking ceremony for a medical college in Guwahati, said his government would change the names of places and villages that are not in accordance with the culture and tradition of the State. .
Meanwhile, he also talked about a web portal that will be launched for the public where they can apply to change the name of their own localities. He also mentioned the name of the Kalaphar region of Guwahati saying that it was named after Kalapahad, the Muslim general of the Bengal Sultanate who attacked the Kamakhya temple, and hence the name should be removed and replaced by an appropriate name in consultation with the people.
Notably, Assam CM came under fire last year when it renamed Rajiv Gandhi National Park to Orang National Park, a move that was made at the behest of the Tea Tribe community. To further clarify on this, Sarma said there is no tradition of naming national parks after political leaders.
Assam government follows Uttar Pradesh lead
The Assam government’s decision comes in view of the renaming practice carried out in Uttar Pradesh by CM Yogi Adityanath. The BJP government of UP which has already renamed Allahabad to Prayagraj has changed the name of Faizabad Railway Station to Ayodhya Cantonment.
Apart from this, the UP government is also happy to change the names of several places with regard to the demands of the workers of the saffron party. Proposals have also been placed for applications.
